Preparing For Teaching English Abroad
Posted by Kiva Richard - 14:43 on 13 April 2012
Teaching English abroad is a great way to get paid to see the world. It also gives you the chance to travel to corners of the globe you may never have had the chance to visit or even thought about going to. Travelling to exotic and remote destinations is incredibly exciting but it is not without its risks. However many problems can be prevented before you leave with a few simple preparations.
Do the research
Once you have picked a destination to travel and teach English as a foreign language you should do your research. Find out a little about the culture, learn a little of the language if possible and get clued up on any local customs or etiquette you should be aware of. It is in easy to find information on the web about your country by doing a quick country search. BBC country profiles have lots of useful information and may be worth a look.
Keeping safe
Wherever you travel in the world there are certain risks you should be aware of. Street crime, drugs and prostitution can be common in many cities in the developing world. As long as you take the correct precautions you should be okay. Do your best to avoid notoriously unsafe areas on your own, and keep your possessions in a secure place. Make sure you have comprehensive medical insurance and cover before you set off. At TEFL Wales we are working with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to help British nationals stay safe abroad. Check out FCO website for up to date information about the status of a country and how safe it is to visit.
Finding a good TEFL job
All of the TEFL Jobs on our website are from employers who have contacted us and are looking for our graduates to employ. We also have a TEFL Employers Directory of over 8,500 contacts that puts you in touch with reliable employers all over the world. If you decide to travel out to the country and find a job once there this can be a good way to make sure you are getting a good deal and offers a chance to speak face to face an to your employer and agree upon the terms of your contract.

What our students say about us...
“Although a little scary, the practical lessons we gave each other will be tremendously helpful. The way Alex put info over was excellent. After two days of pretty intense stuff, I have come away feeling I have really achieved something worthwhile.”
